Richard Groat doesn’t let dyslexia stop him from reaching his dreams and fighting for America’s.

“LEAD gave me the tools to be a successful Army officer, student and businessman,” says Richard, who was Co-President of his LEAD graduating class. “The self-advocacy skills, confidence and understanding of my learning style has allowed me to be successful in my academic and professional endeavors.”

After graduating from Cheyenne Mountain High School in 2005, Richard went to the University of Northern Colorado (UNC), where he earned his bachelor’s degree in History in 2009. He also received the UNC President’s Award.

Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he served as an Infantry Platoon Leader with the 1st Battalion 22nd Infantry Regiment in Afghanistan in 2010-2011, and was deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2013. He graduated as an honor graduate from the Signal Captains Career Course in 2014, and served as Battalion Communications Officer for the 1st Battalion 44th Air Defense Artillery Battalion from 2015-2016.

During Richard’s time in the Army, he received multiple military awards including the Bronze Star.

“I’m proud of the opportunity I was given to lead soldiers and serve my country,” says Richard, who left active duty and joined the US Army Reserves as a Captain in 2016. “It was a hard decision to leave the active service, but I wanted to peruse other interests while continuing to serve my country.”

Upon graduating from the University of Denver with a Master of Business Administration degree in 2018, Richard became the Product Manager for Ethernet Private Line including Global Responsibilities for CenturyLink.
